Have you ever worked out to the point where your mind talks to you?
You start off and it's just you and the workout, all is going well and your hitting those markers...
Then comes a small bump and up pops Mr Miserable in all his glory.
He sits and watches for a while, chilling on his stoop while you push on. Another bump and he's up, slowly walking towards the foreground of your mind space.
"Wow this is hard, only 500 meters gone... your struggling already, why are your legs hurting so much... how are you even going to finish this workout your only a few minutes in..."
Once Mr Miserable is talking to you, he will only get louder. It's no longer your physical strength at mercy here. Your success or lack of it is determined by your mental strength. Keeping the voices at a far enough distance to keep you moving forward is key. Strong & steady.
This Saturday I did a workout where my mental toughness was pushed to breaking point. Did I break....?
Not only was Mr Miserable ripping my workout to pieces he was filling my mind with so many thoughts, I found myself fighting a battle on all fronts. I was out numbered and I drowned. On two occasions I dropped that bar and my partner had to take over.
Did I fuel my workout wrong? Did I go out of the blocks too quickly. Was I just too weak to get through the reps?
No to all of the above. It was simply my mind being beaten. Myself believing I wouldn't be able to get that bar above my head again if I tried. That I needed more rest. That I was beat.
All I really needed to do was grit my teeth and go again. The mind is primary, and the workout was perfect for exposing another weakness. A weakness that is now less so.
Just like how your physical fitness is improved by pushing it to the limit, so is your mental strength.
I've been there now, that dark place where the voices live.
The next time, it wont feel as dark...
