Why Do You Fitness?
In July this year, I took a week out and headed off to sunny Spain for a family holiday.
As we packed our suitcases ready to go, my eldest asked if she could take her bucket & spade for the beach. (This was a bucket & spade bought 2 years back in Greece, split in 2 parts and only really used in the garden for messy play… )
‘I tell you what, when we get to the beach, we can choose a brand new one, how about that?’
That seemed to appease her… and all was again, good in the world…. until we actually got to the beach. There were no shops or stalls selling anything remotely fun for children. Shit.
We saw plenty of shops driving through the town but that was a 4 mile round trip. We’d parked and if we drove back we wouldn’t get another space anywhere near the beach front.
“Sod it, I’ll run it.”
I was over due a decent workout and with all the travel chaos that comes with travelling abroad, I could do with the de stress.
“You can’t, it’s miles away and it’s over 40 degrees today. You’ll die”, said a worried family member…
To be fair, I’m not a runner. I hate running. I hate cardio in general, but I’m pretty fit and I’m sure the hard work I put in at the gym would get me through a 2 mile run to the shops and a 2 mile run back to the beach without much trouble. Plus, my little girl was counting on me wasn’t she… Daddy can do anything…
“I’ll be fine, grab me that water and I’ll be back before you’ve unpacked”.
Before I knew it I was in the town, looking at Frozen & Paw Patrol themed beach toys, judging the shop keepers conscience on how ridiculously high the mark up was on each tiny bucket & spade… But with sweat dripping on everything I looked at, I decided to give in and pay the extortionate fee that comes with keeping a child happy and set off on the return leg… back to the beach!
The run back was quicker, slightly downhill - I started passing people I saw on the way up and not before long I was back on the sand, running towards my little girl and her huge smile.
Was I dripping with sweat? Yes.. Was I out of breath? No not really. And that’s when I realised why I train and what training & fitness in general really means.
It was simply the difference between doing & not doing. The difference between being able to do and not being able to do.
If I didn’t have at least 4 miles in the tank for my little girl… what could I say for what I do every other day. My training would mean for nothing.
Being fit & healthy in mind & body must be high on the priority list for every human being on planet earth surely?
Why wouldn’t you want that? To give yourself the opportunity to be able to do as much as possible in life, for as long as possible. Whether it’s your general health & wellbeing, or a 4 mile round trip in 40 degrees heat…
Why do people feel it’s too hard, too difficult, too expensive, too boring? Have you ever really tried? What is that cigarette doing for you? What don’t you like about fruit & vegetables… What’s so difficult about copying a recipe and making your own dinner out of ingredients that aren’t made up of 10+ different things?
Try it. Change one thing about your life that you don’t like. Add something in that benefits you or take something away that has a negative impact on your mindset. Make it normal. Then change another… then another. That right there is progress towards a better you.
Eat well, exercise, have fun & most importantly… smile! I promise you. A fitter healthier you will GUARANTEE you a better quality of life.
